Lobo entered the tilt-up industrial building on the seedy north side of Sacramento, half-surprised to find Dana Krabbe still alive. Root had drawn the unwelcome assignment of watching her overnight in the cold, dank warehouse. Lobo thought his capricious employee might terminate his confinement with the woman by wasting her for the sheer fun of it. That would have spoiled the plan, though Lobo had a contingency in place, just in case. Maybe Root’s impulse control was improving after all.

“Put her in the car,” Lobo said, nodding at the woman’s car parked inside the building.

“Want me to cut her loose?” Root said. Krabbe’s feet and hands were bound and she still had the gag stuffed into her mouth.

Lobo nodded and watched as the bindings were cut and the gag removed. “Don’t say a word or try anything,” he said to her. “If you do, my friend here will shoot you. If you follow instructions you will be fine and you’ll be back home with that little dog of yours by afternoon. Now get up.”

She’d spent the night seated in a plain wooden chair. From the looks of her, she’d been sobbing, though by now fatigue had set in and she had stopped her protestations. Both men walked her to the rear of the car. Root popped open the trunk and gestured for her to get inside.

“Where are we going?” she said weakly.

“Just for a little ride,” Lobo said.

Root drove the car towards downtown, Lobo behind him in the Challenger, sunrise still a good ten minutes away. For some reason, Lobo felt nervous about the operation, though so far it had gone flawlessly. Maybe it was all the moving parts in this one, the human elements. That’s where things could go wrong and bite you. They merged on to Interstate 5, Root in the lead proceeding at an inconspicuous sixty miles per hour, just as Lobo had instructed. A new storm front had come in overnight and a torrent of rain battered Lobo’s car. Spray from several big rigs in front, and to the side, hindered his visibility even more. He was relieved when they pulled off the freeway and drove through the park to the adjoining residential neighborhood.

Lobo continued to follow behind Root as they slowed in front of the house before continuing on. Lobo picked up his cell phone. “Looks like he might still be home. I’ll wait just up the street and keep an eye on the house. You wait in the park and I’ll let you know when he’s gone.”

Lobo fretted over the next step, the one that would be most risky—getting Krabbe into the damn house unseen. Root had checked out the neighborhood the previous morning and reported that all the nearby residents left for work by eight fifteen in morning. As eight o’clock approached, several people had already departed, their homes darkened, clearly vacant until they returned home in the evening.

The rain started to ease, slowing to a light drizzle before stopping altogether. Hazy sunlight sifted through the blanket of clouds to the east.
